The brief
A column-free venue for the 2018 Commonwealth Games
The Queensland State Velodrome was a $59 million project built for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. It was designed to international standards, with an indoor environment that has no internal columns, so every spectator has an unobstructed view.
A design this complex needed a surveying consultant who could offer proactive solutions to the project's toughest construction challenges. We were appointed early, and the client gained accurate construction surveys, set-out and management, along with a partner who could solve problems alongside them. Monitum, our automated monitoring arm, now monitors the structure so the state can maintain it over the long term.
How we did it
Construction surveys as the foundation
We began with precise construction surveys, which gave the client a base to build from. Early consultation with the client and key stakeholders helped us identify the specific challenges and how best to approach each one.
Early appointment, geospatial knowledge
Because we were on the project early, our geospatial knowledge was leveraged to shape decisions before they became problems.
Traditional and 3D constructible methods
Our surveyors worked in both traditional construction and 3D constructible environments, using laser scans and BIM integration. We supported every stage of the project, from raising sections of the steel roof to helping the track builders with the wooden track surface.
Long-term monitoring with Monitum
Since construction, Monitum has been responsible for ongoing monitoring of the venue, using terrestrial laser scanning, automated tilt monitoring and environmental IoT sensors.

The client received accurate construction surveys, set-out and management, along with proactive solutions to many of the project's construction and design challenges. Automated monitoring now lets the state track the structure's health over time and plan maintenance of the venue.
