The brief
A once-in-a-generation river crossing for Brisbane
The Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is a 460 metre pedestrian and cycle bridge connecting Brisbane's CBD to Kangaroo Point. Part of the city's infrastructure pipeline ahead of 2032, it was delivered by Brisbane City Council and opened to the public in December 2024.
A single 95 metre mast, 32 cable stays, marine construction logistics and a modular deck meant traditional surveying methods would not be sufficient. The structure demanded a control network spanning both banks of the river, QA of every prefabricated component before it left the yard, and live verification as components were lifted into place.
How we did it
From the outset it was clear that traditional surveying methods would be insufficient. The bridge’s marine construction logistics, modular design and technical tolerances called for a survey approach designed around the construction sequence rather than fitted to it.
High-precision control across the river
We established and maintained a high-precision control network across both sides of the Brisbane River, tied to state datums and re-observed throughout construction. Level closures between benchmarks were held to 3 mm, giving every later measurement a stable reference regardless of which bank, barge or deck segment the crew was working from.
QA of prefabricated components
All prefabricated structural components were surveyed at the Port of Brisbane before transport. Checking geometry in the yard, rather than on the water, meant fit-up issues were resolved before a component was ever lifted.
Real-time verification during installation
As deck segments, the mast and cable stays were installed, we verified position and geometry in real time so the construction team could adjust immediately rather than after the fact. The concrete deck geometry model was revised 33 times through construction to reflect actual conditions, keeping the design intent and the built structure aligned.
A three-year partnership
Three senior surveyors invested more than 8,000 hours over three years. The same people who observed the first control marks were on site for the final as-builts, which is what allowed the team to operate autonomously within the contractor’s program.

Three senior surveyors across a three-year program.
Concrete deck geometry kept aligned with as-built conditions.
Every structural component was installed accurately on the first attempt, and the project received an Excellent Infrastructure Sustainability rating. Three senior surveyors carried the project from the first control observation to opening day, giving the construction team a single, consistent point of contact for three years.
Awards & Recognition
Infrastructure Sustainability Rating: Excellent
The project was recognised for sustainability outcomes across design and construction, supported by precise geometry control that minimised rework and material waste.
