Wulkuraka Retaining Wall
Wulkuraka Retaining Wall located at Wulkuraka Train Station is situated in the suburb of Wulkuraka, Ipswich. Pronounced “woolcooracca” which means ‘flowering gum tree’ also refers to as ‘plenty of kookaburras’. The area of Wulkuraka will benefit from a new rail maintenance centre to be constructed next to the Wulkuraka Train Station. The Wulkuraka Retaining Wall was part of the $4.4billion New Generation Rolling Stock (NGR) Project for Queensland Rail. This will be the largest single investment by Queensland in trains, and aims to notably increase the train fleet to meet the growing demand for the region’s rail services. The Wulkuraka Retaining Wall was constructed as a 430m long 5m high reinforced concrete retaining wall and required excavation and retention of an earth batter to provide additional access for the new railway bypass line into the facility. It is envisaged that the NGR project will offer approximately 514 full-time employment opportunities to the local area and on completion of this project it is further hoped that up to 150 full time positions will be required to meet the potential demand of this maintenance centre around 2015 – 2016.
