Buranda TOD Stage 1 Monitoring

Located in popular Woolloongabba, Buranda Railway Station has been servicing the Cleveland line in Brisbane since 1889.

A growing suburb catering to an increase of student residents, located 2klms south-east of the Central Business District and universities/colleges and close to one of the major hospitals in Brisbane.

Before excavation could commence, the Land Solution Australia team started on the initial installation of monitoring equipment for the busway and Queensland Rail infrastructure in November 2015.  Installation of sophisticated monitoring equipment continued to service all relevant infrastructure for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) and Queensland Rail while excavation and construction of a new student accommodation and retail complex was being built, and incorporating upgrades of infrastructure services and connections.  Project completed March 2018.

Our innovation

Land Solution Australia has managed all monitoring requirements for this site on behalf of the principal contractor that has contributed to a continuous building schedule and managed risk throughout the basement excavation and construction phases of the building.  The complete monitoring solution has included the full integration of inclinometers, vibration crack meters and total station displacement sensors in a single data hub managed 24hrs a day by qualified surveyors expertly qualified in precise measurement and spatial data.

The introduction of a Total Automated Monitoring Solution for the entire project incorporating monitoring and reporting compliance for the principal contractor, DTMR and Queensland Rail.

Recommendation of a smart solution

The diversity of infrastructure surrounding the proposed construction site required the Land Solution Australia team to propose dedicated monitoring solutions for the site.  This meant that geotechnical sensors with surveying monitoring platforms to observe baseline as one solution, while the installation of an automated robotic total station and monitoring prisms to monitor the retaining walls and tunnel structure in the DTMR busway as another solution.

Premium service delivery

The complexity of this project meant that during the excavation and construction of a newly built student accommodation and retail outlet, a five-point monitoring solution provided to the principal contractor, DTMR and Queensland Rail meant that all relevant infrastructure was carefully monitored, with an alerting system to provide confidence to mitigating risk and that a robust risk management solution was provided to all stakeholders.
